Home design is increasingly catering to pets, with a significant number of households in North America embracing the concept. The rise in pet ownership is reshaping what constitutes a perfect family home, ensuring it accommodates every member, including the furry ones.

According to the American Pet Products Association (APPA), 45 percent of U.S. households own a dog, and 26 percent have a cat. In Canada, the Canadian Animal Health Institute (CAHI) reports that 60 percent of households have pets.

Interior design is evolving to meet the lifestyle needs of homeowners and their canine and feline companions, with community-based pet amenities and stylish design features integrated into homes.

Prime Location Considerations

While home design is crucial for pets, the surrounding community is equally important.

Dog owners require nearby amenities such as green spaces and safe walking areas. Ideally, your community should feature a dog park or walking trails.

Recognizing the role that housing and community design play in facilitating a pet-friendly lifestyle, many new communities now offer amenities and social events geared towards pets.

Designing a Secure Yard

A yard is a valuable asset for pet owners, but it should be designed with safety and enjoyment in mind.

A fenced-in area is essential. Choose materials without gaps that a pet could escape through. Material choices should complement your home's exterior. Check with your Homeowners Association (HOA) for any material restrictions.

If space allows, a dog run can provide extra fun and exercise, especially for larger breeds.

For large properties, an invisible fence can allow pets to roam freely while staying within safe boundaries.

When landscaping, select pet-friendly plants and avoid toxic ones to create a safe outdoor environment for pets.

Selecting Durable and Pet-Proof Materials

Pets can put household finishes and materials to the test, so choosing easy-to-clean, durable materials is crucial.

Hard floors are easiest to keep clean, but not all hard materials resist scratches well. Tiles, whether stone, ceramic, or porcelain, are generally scratch-resistant, especially if glazed and sealed.

Hardwood floors are relatively easy to clean but can scratch easily. Luxury vinyl plank offers a pet-friendly, durable alternative with a hardwood look.

Furniture should be easy to clean, ideally with leather or stain-resistant fabric. Opt for machine-washable textiles.

The Versatility of a Mudroom

A well-designed mudroom is invaluable for pet owners, especially after walking a dog on a rainy day. It contains messes from outside and is perfect for adding pet-friendly features like a dog wash and concealed storage for toys and food.

A mudroom is also an excellent spot for a litter box, ideally in a secluded area. Installing a fan that vents outside can help manage pet odors.

Integrated Aesthetic Enhancements

Food and water dishes can be messy and take up space. Built-in feeding systems offer a stylish, space-saving solution. Options include pull-out drawers in toe-kick spaces or built-in systems in kitchen islands.

Consider installing a pet-sized pot filler above a feeding area for easy water refills.

Even if your pet sleeps with you, providing a designated bed space is recommended. Hidden dog beds or crates built into cabinetry are practical and can blend seamlessly into your decor.

Utilize architectural features, like creating a cozy pet space under a staircase.

Embracing Pet-Focused Technology

Smart tech gadgets and systems allow homeowners to monitor and care for their pets remotely.

Pet cameras enable remote monitoring, ensuring pets are safe. Two-way audio allows you to communicate with your pet, reminding them to stay off furniture or praising good behavior.

Automatic pet feeders, controllable via an app, are great for cat owners who may be away for extended periods.

Automatic pet doors, activated by motion sensors, provide convenience and security.

Innovative Cat Spaces

Cats also benefit from pet-focused interior design.

Catios, or outdoor enclosures, offer a safe space for cats to play and enjoy the outdoors. These range from small, single-level enclosures to large playground-style structures with toys and platforms.

Built-in, wall-mounted cat beds with plush textiles and sleek finishes provide a stylish and comfortable napping spot for cats.

Essential Features for Pet-Friendly Homes

A pet-friendly home prioritizes function. Here are some additional features pet-owning households will appreciate:

  • Central vacuum for quick cleanup.
  • Upgraded HVAC systems with high-end filtration to reduce pet dander.
  • Increased insulation and soundproofing to muffle barking noise.
  • A bathtub, useful even if you primarily use a shower.
  • A bay window with a window seat for pets to watch the world go by.

By integrating these features, homeowners can create a space that is both stylish and accommodating for their beloved pets. Discover all of the pre-construction properties that include pet amenities.
